Memories of Monsieur Gaudin

Random Quotes & Images

A contribution by a former student at the Lycéen Français de Londres evoked its “Proviseur” (or Headmaster) at the time I was there: Augustin Gaudin. He was appointed there in1948 and was Proviseur until 1965.

The original post on Facebook on 30 April 2021 promped many other memories including my own:

I also had to deal with M.Gaudin. Back in 1963. My Turkish class mate Celal Kavur and I used to contribute to the « Petit Lycéen » (remember Mr. Blake’s cartoons? ).

When Kennedy was assassinated, Celal and I, both under the shock, wrote an obituary for the PL, in which we expressed our feelings and political opinions in a very frank manner.

That’s when M. Gaudin intervened. It was not to his taste, far too explicit. At this point my memory fails me: the article either had to be heavily edited or was entirely censored. I think the former.

It arrived a bit late for publication, and the editor (name will come back to me…) was not too pleased! Also writing for the PL was Jean-Louis Lescene, later to be a TV journalist on France 2. Editor was Vincent ?. Caroline Carron-Thom will remember. That’s it, mes amis anciens Petit Lycéens 😉
