Chopin – Prelude in E Minor (Op. 28 No. 4)
First heard in the film Florence Foster Jenkins (2016) de Stephen Frears starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant. Pianist: Rousseau YouTube.
Chopin’s most melancholic prelude, which by his own request was played at his funeral. I’m not sure if anyone has captured the sense of despair quite as well as Chopin has in this piece, I find it incredible that we can still experience the emotions he felt almost 200 years later, forever preserved in this beautiful work…
Interesting fact: The piece wanders around E minor but doesn’t actually include an E minor chord until the final bar. That’s why the tonic at the end is so satisfying.
